Abstract: Modern implementations of exception handling make the facility almost cost free for those times you don't actually end up throwing an exception. There's a big complexity cost to this, and a lot of work that happens when we step off the happy path. This presentation rolls up its sleeves and looks at what actually happens when you throw an std::exception() on modern Linux systems.

Slides: https://github.com/cppdug/presentations/blob/master/files/2018-05-14/Thoroughly%20Modern%20Mongo.pptx

Abstract: Keeping up with recent improvements to the C++ standard is considered a priority at MongoDB; from its origins in C++03, the project has been successively migrated through C++11 and 14 in recent years, with an imminent move to C++ 17 on the horizon. For a codebase that is already nearing a million lines of code and with any number of areas under continuous active development, this commitment obviously presents a significant logistical challenge. This talk will discuss why and how we invest ongoing effort into incrementally modernising the codebase itself, as well as our build system and testing infrastructure, in service of ever greater developer productivity.

Abstract: The UNIX Filesystem story goes back to the first implementation of the operating system. Since then there were many different implementations and improvements, that makes FileSystem quite complicated but also rock solid piece of software. Currently, most people treat FS as a black box or indivisible part of OS. In this talk, I want to present some basics about FS by doing a simple implementation of Filesystem.

About the author: Maciej is a Software Engineer at Veritas Technology where he is working on Veritas Filesystem, doing maintenance and helping company customers with the different type of challenges.
He started his career by writing software for embedded devices, but during the time he focused more on UNIX servers. He has experience with Device Drivers and Application stacks on Linux and FreeBSD.
Previous working experience includes companies like Intel, NTT or Samsung. JSON++ - A simple C++ class library for JSON

Abstract: I have been working with JSON recently in a number of C++ projects and wanted to learn it by understanding the JSON specification by writing my own JSON parser / encoder. There are a number of nice JSON libraries for C++ out there such as SimpleJSON ; and JSON for Modern C++ ; . I particularly liked the SimpleJSON library which was able to implement a nice JSON parser / encoder in c. 1300 lines of code. I decided to write my own class based on SimpleJSON but using some modern C++ features such as r-value references, move constructors and operator=. Thus was born JSON++.

Variadic templates and fold-expressions

Abstract: It all started with a single printf causing undefined behavior due to mismatch of the format string and arguments. To solve similar problems in a type-safe manner C++ introduced variadic template parameters and fold-expressions. Denis covers the basics and shows how a type-safe printf function can be implemented.

Abstract: There is a common perception that progress is linear and everything gets better all the time. Unfortunately, this is not true. Sometimes old achievements are forgotten to be reinvented much later in a different form. Or not reinvented at all. This talk describes one of such cases: rise of minicomputers that resulted in fall of mainframes, what was state of the art in programming languages at that time, how C programming language came to life and thrived on ruins of forgotten technologies, what we lost and still keep reinventing as a result.

Abstract: C++20 concepts give us a brand new way to specify how our generic libraries and algorithms should be used and allow library users to better understand what is expected of them. However, concepts didn't rise from chaos, and before their adoption C++ library authors had other mechanisms to meet that goal. In this talk I'll briefly discuss concepts, and focus on their pros and cons compared to more mature mechanisms. Special attention will be given to the 'semantic' vs. 'syntactic' nature of concepts, and I'll try to give motivating examples of semantic-only concepts. I'll then explore best practices, and show potential pitfalls in various approaches to the challenge of defining interactions between generic code authors and users.

Talk outline:
- Problem statement, examples of 'concepts in the wild' (iterator traits, trivially-copyable, ordering)
- Brief overview of C++20 concepts - syntax alternatives, common examples
- Pre-concepts typical approaches - mainly type-traits, iterator_traits, void_t, enable_if
- Tricky cases: semantics vs. syntax; common/subtle 'bugs'; explicit call-site override
- 'Philosophical' discussion on core concepts - cheaply-copyable, trivially-copyable</video:description><video:content_loc>https://peertube-playlists.web.mucs.club/hls/5d1dcaf6-d4f1-434d-a2e3-49a552764185/4dd16728-c010-44e9-91aa-3aa3cc738bce-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.mucs.club/videos/embed/cuUDfUL38sesmM3csiXwJz</video:player_loc><video:duration>4161</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-08-31T12:22:06.121Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>c++</video:tag><video:tag>concepts</video:tag><video:tag>programming</video:tag><video:tag>meetup</video:tag><video:tag>systems</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.mucs.club/c/cppdug/videos">cppdug</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.mucs.club/w/2J8PdDZEYaoE1Ff1Pbo9NG</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.mucs.club/lazy-static/thumbnails/44d9c783-f892-4733-9ddc-3ad916878f70.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>"Understanding value categories in C++" by Kris van Rens</video:title><video:description>Talk slides: https://krisvanrens.github.io/slides/value-categories-talk/talk.html

Abstract: In C++ today, do you know what an xvalue is? Or a prvalue? Why would you want to know? Because it matters! In C++, each expression is characterized by a value category. These value categories are used to describe parts of the C++ standard, and are often used in books and articles. You might have heard of terms like 'lvalue' or 'rvalue', which are the most commonly known ones. Over the years, changes to the C++ language changed the meaning of value categories. This means a lot of information about value categories is outdated or just plain wrong. In this talk, I will explain what expression value categories are in today's C++ standard. It turns out that knowledge about value categories can really be beneficial. Not only will it enrich your understanding of C++ in general, it will deepen your understanding of mechanisms like move semantics. Also, it can help you to make better choices about code. These choices can then leverage language rules to enable compilers to generate efficient code without redundant copies. Other, related topics that will be covered: copy elision, return value optimization, temporary materialization.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://peertube-playlists.web.mucs.club/hls/0dfb314f-2cc2-4a77-b9b5-85e9aa76c024/f3feea64-0e56-444d-bc26-3f34dc5a59e5-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.mucs.club/videos/embed/2J8PdDZEYaoE1Ff1Pbo9NG</video:player_loc><video:duration>5318</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-08-31T12:01:42.253Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>c++</video:tag><video:tag>operating system</video:tag><video:tag>programming</video:tag><video:tag>value categories</video:tag><video:tag>compiler</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.mucs.club/c/cppdug/videos">cppdug</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.mucs.club/w/4Py9rrKCft76w3dT9X6sVw</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.mucs.club/lazy-static/thumbnails/5c0e982a-d107-4a3b-bbc1-d552ee681fa6.webp</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>"C++20 Ranges" by Filip Brcic</video:title><video:description>Slides: https://cxx20ranges.brcha.com

Talk description: C++20 Ranges could easily be described as an upgrade of STL. They live in a new sub-namespace, wrap around existing containers and reimplement (most) algorithms in a novel way. By using ranges, the syntax becomes clearer and chaining of algorithms becomes possible. The truly novel feature are infinite, lazy-evaluated "containers". On top of that, all the existing code is already compatible with ranges. This talk will give a brief introduction to ranges, explain how the algorithms have been changed and improved, look into current implementation status and alternatives available for older compilers.

Speaker bio: Filip got involved with programming in the early '90s on his dad's 80286. Since the only game on it was Prince of Persia, and all newer games were for the 16bit 386, learning how to develop games in Borland's Turbo C++ was a logical choice. Thirty years later, he is still interested in C++ (a slightly more modern version), as well as Haskell, Python, GNU/Linux, deep-learning and algorithms. For the past ten years he's been working as a freelance developer, currently mostly in the deep-learning field. Filip received a BSc in control systems and automation at the University of Belgrade. The Secret Life of Numbers

Abstract: They say that 'data expands to fill the space available for storage'. That goes double for numbers — of which there are many. This talk will present my view of numeric types as spans over an infinite range of digits. I'll use this perspective to explore some popular topics in C++ such as compile-time evaluation, fixed-point arithmetic and undefined behavior. While the audience is distracted by ones and zeros, I will flash up subliminal messages compelling them to use my Compositional Numeric Library.

CodeChecker (https://github.com/Ericsson/codechecker ) is an open source analyzer tooling, defect database and viewer extension for the Clang Static Analyzer and Clang Tidy.
It provides a number of additional features:
- Good visualization of problems in the code
- Overview of results for the whole product
- Filtering
- Cross translational unit analysis and statistical checkers support
- Suppression handling
- And many others...
These features simplify the follow up of results and make it more efficient.

In the video, an overview of features and capabilities of CodeChecker is demonstrated as well as a description and recommendation of how to introduce new tools.

Signals make it so that functions appear to magically get invoked spontaneously as your program runs, with just the odd system call returning and setting errno to EINTR as the only side effect. I'll try and demystify the mechanism by which signal handlers get invoked - how we go from executing your main program, to executing a signal handler, and getting back to where you were interrupted.
